Here is an update from my Aug 2012 review. at that time, i was 239# (started at 273 1 year ago). Now i am at 222#. Between labor day and the end of the year, I spent 58 hours on my treadclimber, walked 182 miles and burned just under 37,000 calories... increasing my time from 30 minutes 5/6 times a week to 50 minutes 5/6 times a week.

Had the chance to sit with my doctor this week. blood work continues to show good results. glucose is now at 94, quite a drop from 122 (pre-diabetes a year ago), A1C now at 5.4.. down 1.2 points over the past year. He told me that a recent study showed that reducing A1C by just 0.5 reduced risk of cardiovascular death by 45%. Trigylcerides now at 95 (was at 304).

The weight loss is good, the impact of the exercise on my internal workings is most amazing...Just this week, made it to 2.91 miles in 50 minutes... and aiming to get to 3 miles in 50 minutes in the next month... and to be below 200# by the time spring comes along.

even brave enough to include before/after pictures now!

There is no doubt that the TC10 is a great workout. But, there are many attributes that makes me wish I could upgrade to the TC20. But, to pay $500 out of my own pocket to pack and ship it back and then order a TC20... I will just learn to live with the shortcomings of the TC10.

Here is what I found...

The TC10 treadles (running track) are too short and narrow for anyone over 5'10". If you are over 5'10", get the TC20 which has longer treadles. I am 6'2" and I doubt that I will ever be able to take my hands off the grab bars to keep me from falling off during the workout. For me, I just have to take shorter steps to make the TC10 work.

The G.O. Coach is COMPLETELY useless if more than 1 person uses the TC10. The TC20 supports 2 people on the G.O. Coach. The G.O. Coach is a GREAT concept, but, simply will not work with more than one user.

The TC20 has a Quick Start mode that is more goal-oriented -- set a time or distance or calories burned and work your way up to that... the TC20 lets you know when you have achieved your goal for the workout session. This is the closest thing they have to an automate training mode -- see more comments later on in this review. The TC10 does not have Quick Start.

The plastic is cheap and does not assemble in a tight fashion. This was VERY disappointing.

The height and angle of the console is next to useless for a magazine or iPad during your workout. Your neck will be aching if you try to do this. The TC20 looks like they have improved upon this -- although it might not be perfected.

Like identified in other reviews, the machine is VERY noisy. It also does NOT move easily unless the flooring is perfect to move it. If the TC10 is on the mat and you want to move it on to a plush carpet, it does NOT move easily. Plus, after a workout, you are often so "beat" that you barely have the strength to move it.

One thing to keep in mind with the TC20 and the TC15... there is NO system that will automatically adjust the speed or resistance during your training session. For example, if you like to do interval training on an elliptical or treadmill (differing levels of resistance for various time periods to simulate hills), the TreadClimber WILL NOT AUTOMATICALLY ADJUST THE SPEED based on timed intervals. You control the speed, and, you have to pay attention to the time and adjust the speed yourself. I suspect that this is a safety issue given the design of the machine -- with the short treadles and the intensity of the workout, you want to be in full control of your speed. As a result, there is no computer display telling you that you are in a "cool down" portion of your workout.

I will give Bowflex credit on this -- they are not cutting corners on the no automatic speed adjustments as that is a legitimate safety issue. Plus, when you read the Owners Guide, you really see that they want you to be in control of your workout / training routine... but, they could have at least built in some audible alarms.

I do think Bowflex is cutting corners on the cheap plastic parts that don't fit well together. Same for the height and angle of the console that makes an iPad, magazine or book difficult to read. I also think that the Bowflex web site should have a sales consultant feature that walks the customer through some qualifying questions and make a recommendation (I would have bought the more expensive TC20 had I gone through a recommendation wizard). They should ask questions like: is it important to read a magazine during your workout... TC20. Are you more than 5'10"... TC20. They should ask those questions and explain why the upgraded model is a better fit than the mid-range model.

With all that negative, why would I recommend to a friend / buy it again. Compared to an elliptical, stair stepper or treadmill, the TreadClimber is an incredible workout -- it is in a class by itself. And that is why you buy a machine like this, you want results. So, I will live without being able to put the iPad on it, I will live with the cheap plastic, I will live with the G.O. Coach effectively being out of commission because more than one person uses the machine and I will get used to taking shorter steps and managing my own speed / monitoring the time for the interval workouts. I will live with all these shortcomings because the TC10 is a GREAT workout.

My 2-star rating is deserved by Bowflex. There are so many issues that are documented over the past few years on this web site (that I now echo in my review) that they CAN FIX. For what Bowflex is charging, they should fix these issues and they would have a 5-star product.

Bought it for myself And sister to use. Have always fought the weight battle and wanting something for the house. This piece of machine gives you that. Have type 2 diabetes and have had back surgery in the past hoping this will help keep everything under control. Wanting my sister not to go through the same thing I've been through the last few years. Hoping this machine will take care of that.

          Comments about Bowflex TreadClimber TC10:

This machine gives a totally different workout than walking on a treadmill. The incline of the machine really works your legs, there's no taking it easy on this machine like there is with a treadmill (the option to set the incline flat).
After 10 or so minutes, you'll be sweating...after 30, you'll be ready to get off! Very effective!!

                  • CUSTOMER CARE

                    A:

The TC10 uses hydraulic cylinders to absorb your steps and cushion your joints. You should select a level of resistance that properly corresponds to the weight of the user. The minimum setting is for the minimum amount of treadle movement, while the maximum setting is for the maximum amount of treadle movement.

When adjusted correctly, the treadle should be set so they displace enough to absorb the impact of your stepping motion (about three inches).

                    A:

The hydraulics offer twelve levels of resistance, which can be changed to correspond appropriately with the weight of the user. Ideally, the treadles should travel up-and-down about three inches, to cushion your steps.

Concerning min. ceiling height. Treadle max (14") + my height (65")= 79". My ceiling is 87" (low). While using the machine, does the level of a persons head change much? I'm wondering if 8" will be enough clearance.

                    A:

At their highest point, the treadles are fourteen inches from the floor. After adding that to your height, we recommend adding a few extra inches for comfortable clearance. Eight inches of clearance is sufficient for using this machine.

Does the motor also control the stepping motion or just the belt?

                    A:

The motor on the TC10 controls the speed and movement of the belts. The stepping motion of the treadles is created by your own manual power as you walk.

The TreadClimber does not fold, but it does have transport wheels to assist in moving it.
